ART

Kids Open Art Studio – Saturday Mornings
Instructor: Herman Gilbert
When: Saturdays, 9:00-10:30 a.m.
Students will learn and have fun painting, drawing, sculpting, making ceramic
journals, Indian jewelry, and so much more! Children think, create, problem-solve,
and communicate using their imagination. Art improves cognitive and motor skills
along with sensory integration.
Ages: 4-12
Fee: $100/9 classes

Cartooning – Saturday Mornings
Instructor: Herman Gilbert
When: Saturdays, 10:45-11:30 a.m.
This course will cover a wide range of cartooning practices including character
creation/development; backgrounds/scenery; narrative storytelling; caricatures;
and observational drawing from life. Students who attend regularly will complete
a comic strip, comic book or piece of Pop Art, using colored pencil, watercolor, pen/
brush and ink, scratchboard, etc.. Each lesson will build towards this final project,
but each lesson could also stand alone for students who cannot attend regularly.
Ages: 8-15
Fee: $135.00 for 9 weeks

Pottery Workshops - Saturday Mornings
Instructor: Herman Gilbert
When: Saturdays, 11:45 am-1:00 p.m.
Students will learn basic pottery vocabulary and techniques and create finished
pieces.
Weeks 1-4: Box and Lid Creation
Weeks 5-9: Vase Creation
Your creations will be glazed and fired and available to be picked up at a later date
specified by the instructor.
Ages: 8-15
Fee: $ 180.00 for 9 weeks (includes clay, glazes and firing)

Card Creations – Weekday Evening
Instructor: Herman Gilbert
When: Tuesdays, 6:45-7:45 p.m.
Ages: 16-Adult
Weeks 1-4: This and That Card Creation: This class will create 8 cards using a
variety of occasions, using fun products and papers.
Weeks 5-8: Black and White Card Creations: Create some striking cards for a variety
of occasions using printed papers, and a variety of techniques.
Weeks 9-12: Alcohol and Ink Creations: These classes will explore all of the things
we can do with alcohol inks in our card creations.
Fee: $100 for 9 weeks

Description: The primary goal of this training program is to enhance the vocal
skills of aspiring as well as professional talent. Students will engage in targeted
sessions that will work to improve music literacy, sight reading of musical
notation, ear training, counting and subdivision of rhythm, stamina, accuracy,
fluidity, artist repertoire and more..
Fee: $100/9 weeks

Description: Auditioned members will be selected to develop the sounds of
Karamu. Group will develop a playlist of songs to be taken into the community,vchurches, schools, and in the theatres of Karamu House.

DANCE

Placement in dance instruction classes will be determined by the instructor.
Appropriate dance apparel is required.

TAP
Instructor: Kristen Kozak
A Rhythmic form of dance which emphasizes learning to put rhythm into one’s
feet while dancing. Exploring the history of TAP legends and their styles of tap are
explored. Tap shoes are worn for class learning.

Pre-Professional Dance Troupe
Instructor: Kristen Kozak
These classes focus on establishing a strong dance technique in Modern Dance,
Hip-Hop and Jazz to perform creative works of the students and the instructor.
The class objective is to build a focused ensemble of young dancers and provide
performance opportunities at community events.

Tiny Tots Ballet
Instructor: Kristen Kozak
Beginners’ class for toddlers and Pre-K students. Creative movement, balancing,
gross and fine motor skill development. There is a strict ballet attire dress code.

Beginning Ballet

Ballet is a highly technical form of dance which uses French terminology to explain
steps learned. Ballet class consists of dance, music, and choreography.

Jazz Styles
Instructor: Kristen Kozak
A style of dance that is shared by broad range of styles like Broadway, Music
Video, Lyrical and more. This class will explore the many different growing
possibilities in Jazz Dance today.
Ages: 8 – 16
When: Saturdays - 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.

Tap Dance – Weekday Evening
Instructor: Kristen Kozak
These classes focus on teaching different tap techniques to beginners and
intermediate students. Tap is a style of American theatrical dance using precise
rhythmical patterns of foot movement and audible foot tapping.

Traditional African Dance – Weekday Evening

Classes are designed to help students increase physical activity by learning
traditional African Dance movements and choreography. No experience required
for beginners class.
