About Karamu House

In 1915, Oberlin College graduates Russell and Rowena Jelliffe opened the Playhouse Settlement in a Cleveland area called The Roaring Third.  The Jelliffes wanted to build an environment where people of different races, religions, and social and economic backgrounds could come together to seek and share common ventures through the arts, and Karamu House was established as a gathering place for racially-diverse members of the surrounding community at that time. As the community became predominantly African American, Karamu responded with programs geared to their needs and interests. 

 

Today, Karamu is evolving to be reborn as a beating heart for the entire community, regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identification, or age, as it embarks on its second 100 years, retaining its historical identity as “a place of joyful gathering.” Core programs include a five-performance, socially-relevant and professional quality theatre season; arts education in drama/theatre, music and dance for all ages; and community programming, such as a lecture series, and spoken word and music performances, that invites participation and engagement, reflection, and a re-commitment to cultural values.

 

FRONT OF HOUSE ASSOCIATE

Karamu House is seeking a Front of House Associate to join our team.  The Associate will work closely with the Director of Marketing, Box Office Manager, and Business Office Manager to provide a positive initial experience to all of our patrons at the Box Office and during various community events. They will provide accurate information to patrons about events, assist with purchasing/picking up tickets for events, and at times may manage front of house inventory. 

 

This is a part time 29 hours per week position, which includes competitive hourly pay rate. Must be available nights and weekends.

 

The ideal candidate will enjoy working with the public, possess strong computer and phone skills, pay attention to detail and have good follow-up skills. This person is able to work well under pressure by maintaining composure while keeping an exceptional level of customer service. This person is expected to work cohesively with all employees.

 

ESSENTIAL ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:

  • Represent Karamu House by offering superior, individualized guest service.
  • Provide superior customer service to all clients.
  • Accurately operate the ticketing system for event ticket sales.
  • Process subscription sales.
  • Problem-solve through effective patron communication (I.e. locate and deliver will-call/guest list tickets).
  • Conduct & track weekly inventory of all front of house sales items such as soda, candy, beer, wine, and liquor.
  • Clean & organize front of house concessions areas as well as product storage areas.
  • Prepare or disseminate marketing packets, and record patron attendance.
  • Responsibly handle cash (per KH financial protocols) and provide financial reconciliations as needed.
  • Assist with marketing and group sales promotions.
  • All other jobs/duties assigned by Box Office & Event Managers
  • Act as a Karamu House ambassador.

 

SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Strong computer skills
  • Demonstrated ability to handle cash responsibly and accurately
  • Demonstrated ability to develop a growing knowledge of ticketing
  • Strong organization skills with attention to detail and strong follow-through
  • Self-starter
  • Demonstrated 2 years exceptional customer service

 

COMPENSATION

Hourly compensation will be commensurate with the experience and competitive with similar positions throughout the region.
